History

The group meets on the 3rd Friday of each month in the Community Room, at Ilkeston Fire Station, from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon.

A charge of £1.50 is made to cover the cost of refreshments and visiting speakers.

We cover a wide range of local, regional and National history – including significant events, people, places, artefacts, industries, technologies and much more.

Our monthly meetings usually involve a presentation (by a visiting speaker or one of our members) or a video or DVD, refreshments halfway through and time to chat, share ideas and plan our programme.  We also organise visits to places of interest (mainly in the warmer months) and enjoy the occasional quiz.

We aim to have a varied programme and encourage all members to be involved and contribute to ideas and planning and, if possible, to research and present a history subject of their choice – it can be short or long.   We also record our own stock of interesting TV programmes to share with the group and take advantage of the library of material available from National U3A’s Resource Centre.
