We meet on alternate Thursdays from 2.00 to 4.00 pm at Ilkeston fire station.
The group has about 16 members at present but isn’t open to absolute beginners. However, all U3A members are warmly welcome to visit.
The aim of the group is to develop and practise basic everyday spoken French. We don’t undertake written work at meetings although, of course, many do make their own notes. We look at basic grammar points as they arise.
The group’s objective is to develop self-confidence when practising French conversation with one another and, mostly, to enjoy the experience.
We use some online material. We translate, eg, passages from children’s stories in French; straightforward bits from DVDs and anecdotes bravely recounted by members. We are in contact with the Poole (Dorset) U3A, who have recommended an excellent series of simple texts which they have been using with great success, and which we are now about to start using in Ilkeston.
